To make sure that your files are protected from potential data loss due to a system crash, establishing a back up system for your files is absolutely necessary. It’s an imperative to have a back up files to save your self from the hassle of restoring your data during a system failure. Now, before getting into the activity, here are few things you need to know before you start backing up your system:

What’s contained in a full system backup?

• Your current operating system.

• Your applications.

• Your personal files.

• Your computer’s settings

Before you begin…

In order for your system backup to be successful, you need to know how big your complete system is and if your backup drives has enough capacity to store all your files.

In the following steps, you will determine how big each drive on your system is. This is important information to have to not only to back up your system, but also in case you ever need to restore your system. We encourage you to write down this information and keep it in a safe place, just in case.

Windows System Information

1. Open your My Computer icon.

When this window opens, you will be able to see each of the drives in your system.

2. Go to the View menu and select Details.

You should now be able to see the Total Size (or capacity) of each drive. Write down the Total Size number for each drive on your system and keep the information in a safe place.

3. Add up the Total Size numbers for each drive.

This is how much total space is needed to backup your complete system if it were full.

4. Use this number as a guide to figure out how much space you will need on your backup drive to store your complete system.

Macintosh System Information

1. Starting from the desktop, you should be able to see each drive’s icon.

You will view information on each drive individually and then add them up.

2. Select a drive’s icon.

3. In OS X: Go to the File menu and select Get Info (OS X 10.2) or Show Info IOSX 10.1).

In OS 9: Go to the File menu and select Get Info, then information.

4. The Info window will open.

In this window you will be able to see the Capacity of the drive, as well as the amount of space Used on the drive. Make note of the Capacity number and close the window.

5. Repeat steps 1 – 4 for each drive on your Macintosh.

6. Add up the Capacity numbers for all of your drives.

This is how much total space is needed to backup your complete system if it were full.

The question is seldom asked “What are you going to do with your new computer”. Instead it is often a description of hardware or in the case of Windows Vista does the computer or will the computer run adequetly or like “a slug” with the current hardware setup.

People buy computers to run programs , not to test hardware ( generally) or run Operating Systems (OS) – that is unless they are trying to learn a particular job , career or just for the fun of it.

DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD. – News and feature lists of Linux and BSD distributions.

Which Linux Distribution is best?! | Free and Open Source Software … – Which Linux Distribution is best? A Printer-friendly version. A Linux “distro”, or distribution is a collection of programs and utilities that have been tested to work together. DSL takes only 50M bytes on a CD or USB key. …

Linux Distros Have Had ‘App Stores’ For Years | What a n00b! – It appear that the next company to join the ‘App Store’ bandwagon will be Novell. According to PCPro, they’re considering launching an App Store for netbooks,

In the same way before you go to the trouble of installing Linux – partitions, formatting swap files et al consider what after all is your computer going to do and what functions it will serve. Pick the best distro for your needs and budget. On top of that you there may be different configurations or even different versions of the same Linux product .

You need to think and ponder what your new Linux based computer system ( or upgraded former windows system ) will be used for. Is it to be a mission-critical server, a program development workstation or maybe just a new machine for the IT dept. Your answers will affect both your choices of hardware as well as your specific install.

Think carefully before you jump. Consider the costs ( not neccessarily monetary but also time and energies) and benefits of more expensive hardware versus lower lijely downtimes.
