The new Linux user is bound to run into basic problem areas sooner or later. Its like owning a car , or working with Microsoft Windows. It all comes down to basics. Master the basics and you are 80 % there. Simple as that. Just like the basics of computer workstation networking.

Problem one to be expected is ” I cannot Boot Linux Anymore”. It seems that you have successfully installed the Linux distro of your choice. Then one fine day you may a change to your Windows OS- Windows 09 , XP or Vista / System 7/ Suddenly Linux no longer seems to boot and indeed stops working. You no longer see the lilo boot prompt. so you can no longer specify that indeed you wan to boot Linux.

What to do ? It seems that various operating systems tend to think that they are the only ones in the universe. It not unlike media centers in Windows that when newly installed take over and make themselves l”King” the “default” setup.

Therefore when the new Operating System is installed they write things to the area of the system or specifically the hard drive – or now sometimes solid state “hard drives”, called the Master Boot Record (MBR). This process overlays and overwrites the basic Linux boot loader (called LILO) and stops you dead in your tracks from booting Linux.

Overall the best correction is a good prevention . Make an emergency floppy or usb stick as a boot disk.

Keep this handy, when you do update or change your system ( or during any other significant event in your “Linux career” , such as repartitioning your disks or rebuilding your kernel.

Thus if you make a mistake then you can boot with your boot device – be it floppy or usb stick , or cd / dvd.

Its not unlike safe mode in Windows.

Then when you have rebooted your system using your boot device , simply log on as “root”, then type LILO on the command line. This will repair the MBR ( Master Boot Record) reinstalling Lilo.

You are now off to the races !!!

Linux may be great – its open source – this means that you can modify Linux any way you wish for your purposes and enhancements. The other side of the equation of course if that are warranted to share your work and results. If you wish to greatly modify a commercial Microsoft or apple software for your purposed – lots of luck . This is great . However note and remember that Linux is not a bed of roses.

Linux may seem like the best and most powerful set of tools and operating system in the world in the hands of experienced users who can call up ali-baba’s cave in a dash yet for a novice or non experienced Linux user the whole episode will sit dead in the water like John Mc Cain at a campaign debate with Barak Obama much like Homer Simpson being taught a new identity and being tested with “Hello Mr. Smith”

Helping New Users Learn how to Love Linux « Computer Safety Tips – A blogger Slashdot blogger Mhall119 , told LinuxInsider that Linux isn’t hard to learn. They said that all the common problems the new users encountered was not because of Linux but rather because they were still in the Windows mindset. …

Linux and an Eee PC 4g: First Impressions – Hard plastic serves it well, because you forget how small and light it is when you’re pulling it out of your bag and end up tossing it in the air by accident. Battery life is all together good, but not quite long enough. … Fiddling with passwords and root commands is not something I’m used to, but a necessary evil if I’m going to be changing any of the defaults on my netbook which I will be, even if I have to learn how to program Linux on my own. sandwich …

Linux News: Software: HP, Sun Buddy Up to Offer Solaris on … – Starting up a new software company is not very hard, but making it successful requires a willingness to remake old rules to fit the Internet age. Getting venture capital or angel investor funds starts with nailing your story. [Download PDF: 5 pgs | 162k] … Click to learn Sun’s Solaris operating system on HP ProLiant server and blade system computers. The new deal’s intent is to increase demand for Solaris on both HP ProLiant servers and server blades in new markets. …

Linux Life – Playing with Debian 5.0 – I hope to report on my attempts to install various linux distributions onto my laptop computer as well as on the external hard drive. It’s hard to see how MS will come out ahead on this one. As MS gets backed further into the corner the only choice they have is to come out swinging. But we are witnessing the final phases …. to post number 1: microsoft sucks, your a dumbass, and you should learn to reinvest your money… i believe you have your post in reverse… isnt’t microsoft the one usually taking advantage of others?
Distro Review: Sabayon 4.0 | Adventures In Open Source – I’d say it’s probably not a distribution for users who are very new to Linux, it’s not scary or particularly hard to use, I don’t want to give that impression but if you run into problems it’s easy to get lost. There are a lot of good resources on the … I’d be interested to try Gentoo some time to compare and contrast, see what I could learn from it. I expect it would be quite a project though and probably take a week to set the system up with my lack of knowledge. …
