XPaint is a color image editing tool that features most standard paint program options. It allows you to edit multiple images simultaneously and supports various formats, including .ppm, .xbm, .tiff, and so on.

The functionality of XPaint is divided into a toolbox area for selecting the current paint operation and paint windows for modifications and creating images. Each paint window has access to its own color palette and set of patterns, although the paint operation in use is globally selected for all windows. Further information on using XPaint is available by starting it up and accessing its ‘Help’ button.

The internet programs immediately available with GNOME in this particular version of Red Hat Linux can all be accessed directly from the GNOME panel. The small selection here includes various newsreaders, mail clients, and Lynx, which is a text-based web browser.

One program is called Xchat.  This is a no-frill Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client available with the GNOME desktop in Red Hat Linux. Not long ago Linux was a complex operating system used by only  a few gurus and computer nutcases.  Not Linux may be running ordinary things that you use on a daily basis – such as cell phones , home entertainment systems and of course a number of computers.  Some computers , laptops  and pda’s now are even sold with Linux as it base operating system.  It may look so similar to the mainstream Microsoft Windows interface and behave like it in so many ways that you may not even notice the difference at all.   People buy computers and electronic devices for functionality – to have them programs or complete functions not to run operating systems.  You do not ( in most cases)  purchase a computer to run the new Microsoft Vista operating system – you buy that computer to do any of a number of functions with programs – retrieve your email , surf the web , create web pages , download music etc.

It the electronic device fulfills the purpose you require and is stable ( does not fall down on the task),  what does it really matter in any way.  That is the beauty of the development of Linux.

Software is usually named in version numbers.  The big changes  are assigned different distinct version numbers for example 1 , 2 ,3, 4.   Incremental upgrades to a software product will be given a “unique version number ” .   These “unique version numbers”  can be thought of incremental upgrades and updates.  For example the software version may be  Ubuntu version  3,  the upgrade as a theoretical example -version  3.1  which can be followed by  unique version  3.11 or 3.17 or later 3.8.

The beauty of Linux is that it is open source.  As users provide upgrades and fixes – whether because if a defieiency or mistake in the Linux software code , an improvement is made , or new computer hardwae is either introduced or becomes more mainstream and available.

The key is that the version of  the Linux distro you are using supports your hardware and the various components of it.  For example an older version of the same Distro might not support your sound card – hence no sound , or your wireless internet adapter wheras the newer one will .   Yet the newer “improved version of the Distro”  may be too demanding on an older throw away computer you have used to learn Linux with or just too slow.
