Linux Installation Media
Installation of a Linux distro onto the computer of your choice need not be a daunting task.
Installs can be done by any of a number of means . The most common currently is from a CD or DVD into an optical drive that can read it. For example if the install is larger one – then a dvd rather than CDRom might be used. DVD readers and burners can read both CDs and DVDs wheras the converse is not true. A Cd reader or burner can not read a DVD .
CDs hold 640 mb of capacity. This is equivalent to 640 old 1 mb capacity floppy discs. A DVD generally holds approx 4.4 gb ( 1000 mb ) of data. A DVD holds the equivalent data of almost 7 (seven ) CDs. It used to be that CDS were run of the mill and blank DVDs were a lot more expensive – both the blank and by equivalent capacity. However this is not the case now. A blank DVD is approx the cost of a CD. However DVDs are less durable and more easily scratch able. One little scratch on a DVD can mean a whole wasted exercise of doing the Linux install. Worse than that the failure from the media install disc can happen right at the end of the process – having you scratch your head at the wasted time.
CDs are more durable. However in the summer time just a little bit of deposited dirt or grime can cause the same Linux OS install failure as that of the DVD. The answer – simply wipe the CD clean with water – a bit of soap if necessary. Wash the CD clearly – especially the downwards side which is the side which gets read by the optical drive reader. Most important dry both sides of the media – but with a very soft towel or even sock. Do not use a paper towel or tissue. This may scratch the install media.

Specifying a Monitor on Linux Install
At some point in your instal on a Linux OS install you will most likely be presented with a “scrolling list” of monitors whether it be a generic resolution list , or specific brands or models. A similar setup mode and testing scheme exists in the world of Microsoft Windows installs – be it Windows 98 , ME , Xp or Vista.
After this point you may well be asked how many colors ( colours) you would like to display at any one time on the computer monitor screen. Its a trade off – the higher the more resolution of visual appearance , wheras on the other hand the demands on your system and computer system response time will be decreased. Its a trade-off to your needs and the needs of your various software programs , internet dial up vs broadband speeds and indeed in the end what really makes a difference for your computing and internet needs.
While it can be said that the more and the higher the resolution that you display overall – the better generally – however you are in the end limited by the size of your video memory. You may have an integrated, ( that is built in on the computer motherboard) video card so by pushing up your system you are taking system ram and resources from your main system. If you have an add on video card – whether it as an older PCI card , in a throw away computer system that you are using to set up a Linux system , a somewhat newer or similar vintage AGP video card setup or even the newest standard PCI express video card.

Specifications naturally vary depending on what you intend to run on your computer and under Linux. Generally people buy computers to run programs – be it to browse the net , do word processing , read their emails or accounting or play games .
In this case the main use of your computer may not be so much as to run specific programs but actually to run an OS – in this case the Linux OS – to be able to learn and be functional with Linux. It all depends on your needs. If you do need to run programs you may need a more fully featured version or install of Linux or more powerful hardware. If you are running with less powerful computer hardware then you can find any of a number of stripped down versions of Linux available. If on the other hand you are running much more robust applications – say for example serious gaming with number crunching 3d graphic programs then you will need more advanced installs of Linux with more serious computer and electronic hardware.

In its “raw” state true Linux does not use or need a G.U.I. (Graphic User Interface). True Linux is command line based – true to the origins and development of Linux from the UNIX computer operating OS system. GUIs are a convenience added for more basic beginner or medium level computer users.
It is true that a GUI allows for easier and simpler functionality allowing many computer users who wish to learn Linux and use it , any addition to the user interface obviously adds a level of complexity and perhaps ( actually in most cases ) reduced functionality and power. Its always a trade off – this for that. It is true that adding the GUI allows many computer users who would never learn or be able to function in Linux the availability and privilege to do so with ease.
Advanced Linux users are able to do and complete many complex , advanced and most powerful features and functionality that the Linux OS offers. However if not typed in perfectly and in absolute correct typing ,syntax and grammar the system will stuck dead in its tracks allowing the computer user to do nothing – other than being exceptionally and extremely frustrated. Command line Linux offers great power and functionality – that is for those computer users who are most knowledgeable and proficient in its use.
