The window manager acts like a playground monitor; it’s the central point of control for the major windows seen on the screen (and even some windows that can’t be seen). It blows a whistle when a window gets unruly. The window manager can serve also as a desktop, where you can use it to launch applications. A window manager isn’t necessary, but it would be difficult to use more than one or two applications at once without also using a window manager. (The applications themselves would need to be written to allow resizing, window positioning, and so on.)

Window managers may also maintain an icon bar, which keeps icons easy to find and manage, as well as performing other functions. But the most important thing to remember about window managers in X is that they are just user-level programs like any other — they are not part of the system. You have a choice of window managers, and each has different capabilities, although a discussion of window managers other than GNOME and their capabilities is outside the scope of this book.

The Red Hat Linux For Dummies CD-ROMs contain several window managers including the GNOME Sawfish window manager KDE and the previous Linux standard Fvwm. GNOME is the default for Red Hat Linux and so GNOME is the window manager used in this book KDE is similar to GNOME in that it is a modern system but we leave it up to you to explore if you wish. You can also use good old Fvwm to start applications (and stop them of course), move windows, shrink windows, expand windows, and do everything but wash windows. Just think, you can use your system without ever typing a command!

Once Gnome has loaded, you are presented with a graphical user interface (GUI), which shares many features with other desktop environments, based both on Linux and other operating systems. Files and directories (folders) are viewed and handled from windows within the File Manager. Other drives are accessed through the File Manager itself or via desktop icons. Files, applications and web pages can also be accessed via icons on the desktop or on the Panel (at the bottom of the desktop). The appearance of the desktop features can easily be customized.

At first sight, the Linux desktop may appear to have more similarities than differences with, for example, Windows. However, despite these superficial similarities, Linux has many features unique to itself. It also boasts many unique applets, which are application and utilities only available with Linux. Most, if not all, of these applications have been written by independent programmers and released under the GNU Public License. For more information about the author of these programs, choose About from the Help menus of the relevant application.
