Sometimes you might face a slightly tougher problem: The LILO prompt appears, the kernel begins to load, but then things go bad. Maybe the kernel is corrupt, or perhaps Linux can’t find the root partition. In these and several other cases, you may be able to coerce the kernel into booting by passing special options at this prompt.

Here is the lists some common options you can pass to the kernel, and the following series of steps explains how and when to use these options:

Options

Sample Argument

Description

int=

(/bin/sh)

Starts the specified program instead of init.

root=

(/dev/hda1)

Forces the Linux kernel to mount the specified partition as the root.

single

Starts in single-user mode.

vga=

(ask)

Allows you to force a particular video mode during boot. The special parameter asks displays a menu.

At the LILO prompt, press the Tab key. You will see all your kernel(s) listed.

If you have another kernel listed, try that. It may allow you to boot successfully, so that you can fix the problem or remove the bad kernel entirely.

If you do not have a backup kernel, try passing options to the kernel. What option to pick depends on how your kernel is failing.

If the kernel boots, you should fix the problem, remove the bad kernel, or permanently add the options to your /etc/lilo.conf file.

If you have a software problem, you may still have an easy way to fix the problem. Does the computer nearly start up (i.e., it has begun to start at least some of the daemons), but then hangs shortly before turning control over to you? If so, you’re in luck, and you can follow these steps:

Restart the computer. At the LILO boot: prompt, press the Tab key.

You will see a list of kernels. I usually name my custom kernels by their version number, but the default SuSE kernel has the simple label linux. Regardless of the name, your default kernel is probably the first one listed. Type that name, a space, and then the word single, and press Enter.

Linux will now boot in single-user mode. Only the very basic daemons will start, and you will then be asked for the root password. Type it in, and you will be presented with a prompt.

You are now free to fix the problem. If a daemon was stalling and causing the boot to hang, you should either fix the daemon or disable it completely.

Once you are done, type exit. Linux should now boot normally.

For an even more minimal boot, try typing linux init=/bin/bash at the LILO prompt. This starts nothing but the Bash shell, bypassing any daemons or the prompt for a password. Only the root partition is mounted.

The access control offered by making a file owned by a particular user is useful, but crude. To get finer control over who has access to what, you will want to set up groups of users. Groups allow you to grant access to parts of the system to several people at once.

It’s quite easy to set up a group and then add users to that group.

Here’s how:

1. Decide what you want to call your group, and then use the groupadd command as root to add it. (You can optionally specify the numerical ID to assign to the group, but usually allowing the system to choose it is fine.) If your son is grounded from the Internet for two weeks, you might create a group of users who are allowed to use it:

# groupadd internet

2. After you press Enter, the group is added to /etc/group. The new line looks something like this:

internet:x:1O1:

The users that belong to the group appear in the fourth field, separated by commas. Currently no users are in the group.

3. To add users to the group, it is often easiest to load /etc/group into a text editor and modify the file yourself. (usermod is a utility that will allow you to change the groups a user belongs to, but you have to run it once for each user you are adding, and you must specify all groups a user belongs to.) Regardless of how you do it, the line might look like this after adding those who are allowed to use the Internet:

internet : x : 101 :mom, dad

4. Now that the group exists, you will want to apply permissions somewhere, so that the group members have special privileges. For example, the following two commands make a modem (/dev/ttySO) readable and writable to root and those users in the Internet group; no one else can use it:

# chown root:internet /dev/ttySO

# chmod 660 /dev/ttySO

You can create many groups, and add a user to any number of them.

You can delete a user either from the command line or by using YaST, as described in the following sections.

The userdel command allows you to delete users. It undoes most, but not all, of what the useradd command does.See the steps below for instructions.

1. Before you remove a user, take note of the user’s ID number since you may need to know this later. Look at the third field of the user’s entry in /etc/passwd. For example, you can see in this line from the password file that user joe has user ID 100:

joe:x:100:100: :/home/joe:/bin/bash

2. As root, run the userdel command with the username of the user you wish to remove. (Keep in mind that you cannot remove an account if the user is logged in.)

3. By default, userdel will not remove any of the user’s files. To remove the user’s home directory automatically, use the -r option. For example:

# userdel -r joe

If you do not use the -r option, you will need to remove the user’s home directory manually:

# rm -rf /home/joe/

The user may have other files on the system which userdel has not removed. Particularly, look in the /var/spool directory. You might want to remove old mail, for example. Also, the user may have installed a crontab file. Here is how you would remove these things:

# rm fvarfspooi/mail/joe
#rm Ivarlspooilcronltabs/joe

4. It is possible that the user still has some jobs running. Rather than rebooting, you can search for and kill any jobs left running by the user. The user no longer exists in the password file so you cannot search by the user’s name. Instead, search for jobs owned by the user ID you found in Step 1. Here is an example of killing a job that Joe left running:

# ps —user 100

PID TTY	TIME CMD

1490 ?	00:06:21 mydaemon

YaST (Yet another Setup Tool) is the installation and configuration tool for openSUSE. It can be used to configure your entire system. Setup hardware, configure the network and system services, tune your security settings are only a few examples.

You could also add a User using Yast besides command-line approaches. See the steps below.

Start YaST as root.

Select System administration, and then User administration.

On the new screen that appears, type the new user’s name and press Enter. Defaults will appear in all the fields.

Edit the defaults as you see fit, and then type and retype a password.

When you are satisfied, press F4, and user is created

As with adding a user, YaST offers a simpler way to delete a user. Here’s how to delete a user using SuSE’s own administration tool:

Start YaST as root.

Select System administration, and then User administration.

On the new screen that appears, type the new user’s name and press Enter.

Press F5 to delete the user. Answer yes when you are asked if you are sure. Be warned, however, that YaST will allow you to delete a user who is currently logged in.

YaST offers to remove the user’s home directory. Answer yes if appropriate. Any additional files, such as mail and crontab files are removed automatically.

The Linux operating system comes with two interfaces in one, a command line interface (like that found in MS-DOS) and the graphical X Window System, also known as just X, with Gnome sitting on top of X. X itself is said to sit on top of the command line operating system, allowing total access to the operating system through a graphical interface. (Some operating systems, such as Windows ME, provide you with only a graphical interface.)

GNOME is the default graphical user interface (GUI) for Red Hat Linux. You can also use the K Desktop Environment (or KDE) if you want. With desktop environments such as KDE and GNOME, Linux provides a graphical user interface much more like that of Mac OS or Windows than the traditional Unix command line interface. In the same way, many graphical program packages are getting a huge amount of attention for Linux that provide much of the functionality of usual commercial programs available on the other desktop operating systems, although the later are still much greater in extent and magnitude.

Linux is the foundation of the LAMP server-software combination that has attained general appeal among web developers. Usually, Linux is used as an embedded operating system. The low cost of Linux makes it attainable to utilize it in devices such as the Simputer, a low-cost computer targeted especially at low-income populations in developing nations. This stereotype has been subverted in recent years by the increasing user-friendliness and wider adoption of many Linux distributions. Linux has made significant progress in the server and special-purpose markets and is getting to make inroads into the high volume “desktop” market.
