When using Windows with drives that have capacities higher than 64 GB, there are special considerations.

Windows 98SE

FAT32 operates properly with partition <127 GB.

FDISK and FORMAT function properly, but will display an incorrect disk size on the screen.

Limited to partitions <127 GB

Windows Me

FAT32 partitions operate properly as large as the drive’s total capacity

FDISK and FORMAT function properly, but will display an incorrect disk size on the screen.

Defrag works properly on a disk of any size. Do not Scan Disk

Windows 2000, XP

Fat 32 and NTFS partitions operate properly as large as the drive’s total capacity.

NTFS partitions as large as the dive’s total capacity can be formatted properly under Windows 2000 and XP. Fat 32 partitions greater that 32 GB cannot be formatted under Windows 2000/XP.

Defrag works properly on a disk of any size. Do not use Scan Disk.

Operates properly. Note: May take a long time

Disk Management can create NTFS partitions as large as the drive’s total capacity. Disk Management cannot create FAT 32 part.

Note 1: On disks larger than 64 GB running Windows 98SE, both FDISK and FORMAT function properly, but will display an incorrect disk size on the screen. A similar problem can occur with Windows Me at larger disk sizes (starting above 80 GB).

Further information is available on Microsoft’s Web site at http://support.microsoft.com. Search their Support Knowledge Base for articles 0263044 and 0263045.

Note 2: FDISK may not run properly after an external drive has been disconnected and reconnected. Rebooting the computer before running FDISK is recommended.

Note 3: Neither ScanDisk nor Defrag will operate on drive partitions larger than 127 GB. Further information is available on Microsoft’s Web site at http:/ /support.microsoft.com. Search their Support Knowledge Base for article 0184006. Third party utilities can be used to replace the functionality of the ScanDisk and Defrag utilities.

Note 4: Windows 2000 and XP are limited to creating FAT32 partitions < 32GB, you can format FAT32 partitions > 32GB using 3rd party partitioning software. Windows 2000 and XP can mount FAT32 volumes larger than 32 GB that were created by other versions of Windows or 3rd party disk utilities.

Are people ready to change their way of thinking about their software? Linux is a free operating system that anyone can download and customize to their specifications. … Mint Linux – Very good distribution for newcomers. Ubuntu Linux – Currently the most popular Linux distribution out there. Fedora – Another great Linux distro. Debian – It uses an easy installation file format …

Windows 98 works with fat – fat 16 has a 2 gig size limit. Larger than that fat 32 format is used. The 98 stream – win 95, 98 , 98 second edition SE , Windows ME cannot read the newer NTSF file format system. NTSF has certain advantages over fat 32 . It can handle larger drive and drive partition sizes than fat32. It is descended from server technology and is considered safer from data loss and hard drive crashes and failure due to file format problems. Fat 32 is fairly standard but fragments a lot more than NTSF. Windows 98 and its stream cannot read a NTSF formatted drive at all and see it as no drive present wheras NTSF can read fat . The default install for XP is NTSF although fat32 is allowed both to be created or to left alone untouched. The current most advanced OS of Microsoft is Vista which demands NTSF file format.

Understanding Linux requires that you understand the role of hard drive “partitions”. In the world of Microsoft Windows windows runs on one partition ( division of the hard drive). There can be additional partitions – often to divide the drive – either for safety and storage or for different users. Or the drive may be partitioned in Windows due to limitations of the operating system in dealing with very large hard drives – for that OS’s generation , or to prevent hard drive crashes. Not so with Linux.

Linux needs at a a minimum two (2) sections of the hard drive in order to run at all. These sections are called “partitions” and are made before or during the installation. In terms of Microsoft operatins systems a partition will appear as a single drive letter on a hard drive. This setup or drive sequence lettering has its origins in the early PC systems of DOS. As an example a single disk with two partitions might have a C: drive and an E: drive. D: drive would be normally designated to the CD / DVD optical drive. As Windows is installed it sequentially names the drives it finds A – Z. The install process will find the C: first as windows is being installed on it, next the built in optical drive (CD / DVD / now current high tech Blue Ray drive). Hence the PC Dos system has provisions for 26 drives . This would include devices such as flash drive readers installed on the computer.

Note: The following account is actually the second time we installed the Fedora 10 operating system. The first time around, we erroneously used a “live CD” instead of the full setup. The resulting install was like being dumped in the middle of North Dakota without a map or a cell phone. Due to this, we decided to literally erase everything and start all over again. To all of those who wish to try Linux with us, we highly suggest loading the full setup program. It’s a bit more complicated to install, but trust us — it’s worth it.

Our experiment began with Angela replacing her Windows 7 disk with a brand new, 320 gigabyte Western Digital hard drive. While dual-booting is both encouraged and allowed by the Linux elite, we decided to forgo it. Not only does it eliminate the temptation to run Windows, it just makes things easier all around.

The first thing we were greeted by was a message asking us if we wanted the system to “test the install media.” For those who have no idea what this means, a “media test” simply makes sure that your installation disc is in good working order. We chose the “skip” option, but if you’re unsure, it doesn’t hurt. After a few moments, the Fedora logo appeared. We were then asked to pick our language, keyboard layout, time zone, computer name, and administrator (Root) password. We were then presented with a host of formatting options. For the purposes of this post, we chose “create custom layout.” A new screen appears, featuring a plethora of options and check boxes. Many people choose to create two partitions: one for system files, and one for your data. The main advantage to a setup like this is the overall ease of upgrading. With two drive partitions, you can easily upgrade and/or format your system files without ever touching your personal data. Although we decided to forgo that particular setup, we highly suggest that you take it into consideration. It will make your life much easier in the long run. After approving our setup, the install disc went to work.

Once the partition was all set up and ready to go, we were told to pick our installation software. In the list, we were asked if we wanted to install the software needed for “Office and Productivity,” “Software Development,” and “Web Server” implementation. For the sake of this test, we picked all three. You can choose whatever fits your current situation the best. We were also asked if we want to add various “repositories” to the system. By adding these repository sites, your installation can find, offer up, and install various programs, modules, and drivers. We were then given the chance to choose our programs. This step took about an hour, but was actually kind of fun. If/when you attempt something like this, keep the following rule in mind at all times: if you don’t know what it is after reading the description, don’t check it. The last thing you need is an extraneous program gumming up the works.

The operating system started to install about an half an hour later. It took a little while, but that’s understandable considering the files and modules that the system had to go through. Once everything finished, we were told that the system had to reboot. After the rebooting, the system asked if we wanted to send our system profile to “Smolt.” Although there isn’t anything wrong with sending our information off, we declined the invitation, figuring that the people at Smolt had more important things to attend to. With that, our installation was finished. But that doesn’t mean that everything was working…

…And there you have it. In addition to the traditional “Free Line” fare, we will provide updates on the Fedora 10 experiment, including problems, frustrations, and triumphs. Until tomorrow, we bid you all a fond adieu from the land of penguins and GNUs.
