A. Software from Distributor’s CD

• When you insert a CD supplied with the boxed Red Hat distribution, a dialog box asks if you want to auto-mount the CD ROM. Choose Yes, and the Install window opens.

• Initially, the packages that are currently installed on your PC are shown. To view the CD’s contents you need to click the Install button.

• The CD’s contents now begin to appear in the Install window. To view these contents more easily, click on the Expand Tree button.

B. Using the Query Button

•You will make most use of the Query button when exploring the contents of a CD. Although the software on the CD is grouped into categories, you will want to know more about a package before installing it on your PC.

•Highlight the files you are interested in, check the boxes next to them, and then click on the Query button.

•Information relating to each file appears in a separate panel within the Package info panel that opens.

•If you decide to proceed with the installation form the CD, click on the Install button. You can follow the progress of the installation in the Installing window.

C. Software from the Internet

• If you are connected to the internet, the Gnome RPM offers a very useful net download feature, Rpmfind, which you can access from the main RPM window.

• To access this facility, click on the Web Find button. This launches the Rpmfind window.

• The first time you use the Rpmfind window, you are connected to an FTP site that holds the RPMfind database. This downloads a list of packages that appear in the left hand panel under Name and Distribution. Each time you click a plus sign to reveal a submenu, more information is downloaded from the database. In this way, you can access every package that is contained in the database.

•To search the database, type a search term in the box at the top of the window and click the Search button. A list of hits appears in the left-hand panel. You can treat these as any other packages within PRM by clicking any entry, followed by the Query button to find out more.

D. Downloading the Software

•When you click on Install, the package is installed onto your PC, and it becomes accessible through the RPM in the same way as all the other packages on your PC.

In terms of a relatively standard install from a CD- that is booting from a CD or DVD Rom , the steps would be as follows:

First of all this process of booting from a CD Rom is probably the best as well as overall simplest option available.   If you do have a IDE or Sata CD-Rom first change the boot order of the startup to handle this.  Go into your bios setup .  Chose the CD Rom as the first boot device in the boot up sequence.

To enter the bios , note on the initial startup screen the key choices or strokes to “enter the bios”  or “enter the control panel”.   With today’s fast computers this may flash by you in a whiz and may have to be repeated several times.   It is usually the delete key.  Other choices include the <F2> . <F10> or >F12> keys alone or in sequence.   Be careful not to initiate a windows reoovery process by this means , although if you are doing a full hard drive Linux install this will not be of concern.  If you cannot determine what the keystroke or keystroke combination to enter your brand or model of bios – then Google “commands to enter bios”, “Commands to enter bios of your model”  , “How to get into the bios”  and “how to get into the bios of model x”  or even “I cannot get into my bios….model”.  At the worst take out a piece of hardware such as a ram stick , or disconnect a piece of hardware onyour motherboard.

On boot up your computer will recognize that the hardware configuration has changed and will enter its bios in order for you to rectify the situation.

Once in you should be able either spot the setting page simply by ” change boot order sequence” , or find a setting in the bios settings.   Failing that hunt around diligently under the hood.  Simpler on some computer bios models – there may be an additional keystroke choice simply marked “change boot order sequence”
