One of the interesting things about X is that it was designed so that a program could be run on one computer and its graphical display could be on another. What this means is that if you have a reasonably powerful computer (say, an older Pentium 120) and a couple of slow 486 computers, they could all run the latest multimedia version of the Netscape Navigator package. The will then see a listing on your computer monitor screen- the terminal , the user and the log-in time.   Note that in real life computer situations the exact output from the UNIX  “who”  command varies from one version of UNIX to another , but it almost always can be counted on to contain at least these listings and parameters .    In addition you can always type out  the command line “who am I “  and UNIX will simply print just that very line for the terminal ( or terminal window), into which you typed that very command.

Next in line , with powerful UNIX command lines commands is the command “finger”, which is a considerably more powerful informative tool. The finger command produces a much more useful as well as elaborate report than does the  “WHO” command.

Although “finger” reports the same stuff as the command “who”  does it also looks up as well the user’s  real name ( if it is in the user’s password file), and tells how long the terminal itself has been idle ( that is how long since the user typed something”.  You can still see the vestiges of UNIX commands and processes even now in such basic and standard programs as Window’s based MSN Messenger systems and the like.

Not long ago Linux was a complex operating system used by only  a few gurus and computer nutcases.  Not Linux may be running ordinary things that you use on a daily basis – such as cell phones , home entertainment systems and of course a number of computers.  Some computers , laptops  and pda’s now are even sold with Linux as it base operating system.  It may look so similar to the mainstream Microsoft Windows interface and behave like it in so many ways that you may not even notice the difference at all.   People buy computers and electronic devices for functionality – to have them programs or complete functions not to run operating systems.  You do not ( in most cases)  purchase a computer to run the new Microsoft Vista operating system – you buy that computer to do any of a number of functions with programs – retrieve your email , surf the web , create web pages , download music etc.

It the electronic device fulfills the purpose you require and is stable ( does not fall down on the task),  what does it really matter in any way.  That is the beauty of the development of Linux.
