It can be said that you can run Linux on an ancient Intel 386 computer . However it gets tricky and time consuming for beginenrs as you will have to run ALL your programs and commands from the command prompt. However to make your life much easier in the world of learning Linux its easier to use a Windows type What You See is What You Get (WISIWIG) graphical interface. This can be done with even a 486 computer. However in today’s world computer upgrades being what they are even what is now considered a “throw away” computer – be it a simple Pentium computer , a Pentium 2 or 3 or even now a early Pentium 4 computer will make your life and learning easier. Either a true Intel Pentium or an Amd setup will do.

However it can be said that all things being equal a true Intel Pentium computer may offer less variations and is preferred as the basic computer for a Linux setup especially in the hands of a beginner or beginner Linux novice.

Linux Kernel 2.6.27.8 | ComVan – Although originally developed first for 32-bit x86-based PCs (386 or higher), today Linux also runs on (at least) the Compaq Alpha AXP, Sun SPARC and UltraSPARC, Motorola 68000, PowerPC, PowerPC64, ARM, Hitachi SuperH, IBM S/390, MIPS, …

Linux – Where it all started – professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I’d like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat …
