Emergency Recovery: Fixing stalled boots when your system gets unbootable
If you have a software problem, you may still have an easy way to fix the problem. Does the computer nearly start up (i.e., it has begun to start at least some of the daemons), but then hangs shortly before turning control over to you? If so, you’re in luck, and you can follow these steps:
- Restart the computer. At the LILO boot: prompt, press the Tab key.
- You will see a list of kernels. I usually name my custom kernels by their version number, but the default SuSE kernel has the simple label linux. Regardless of the name, your default kernel is probably the first one listed. Type that name, a space, and then the word single, and press Enter.
- Linux will now boot in single-user mode. Only the very basic daemons will start, and you will then be asked for the root password. Type it in, and you will be presented with a prompt.
- You are now free to fix the problem. If a daemon was stalling and causing the boot to hang, you should either fix the daemon or disable it completely.
- Once you are done, type exit. Linux should now boot normally.
For an even more minimal boot, try typing linux init=/bin/bash at the LILO prompt. This starts nothing but the Bash shell, bypassing any daemons or the prompt for a password. Only the root partition is mounted.
