Keep in mind that in the early days of Linux  , Linux versions of distros as well as computer PC hardware that the desktop environment was setup so that a minimum ( min) of 16 bits per pixel was the basic requirement in that the whole setup would not “run out of colors” itself and themselves. It can be said that during the setup routine that most people , that is entry level and starting Linux starting users can simply hit the <Enter> key  to accept that default level that of 16 bits per pixel.
